Real-World Durability

Wear it to the gym, in the shower, at the beach, or while gardening. It won't rust, tarnish, or fade. Unlike precious metals that show wear quickly, and unlike 304 stainless that can discolour in harsh environments, 316L maintains its appearance with almost zero intervention.

Key benefits of Marine 316L Stainless Steel Rings?

  • Lower maintenance than gold or silver—no polishing, no tarnish concerns

  • Safer than 304 stainless for people with nickel sensitivities

  • More traditional weight and feel than ultra-lightweight titanium

  • Practical for active lifestyles—swimming, gym work, manual labour

What Makes 316L "Marine-Grade"?

The "L" stands for low carbon and the "316" designation means it contains molybdenum (2–3%). Combined, those give 316L superior resistance to chlorides, salt, and harsh chemicals that would damage lower-grade stainless steels.

While it's not 100% nickel-free, it's hypoallergenic for the vast majority of people, including many with mild sensitivities.

FAQs

How durable is 316L Stainless Steel?
How durable is 316L stainless steel compared to other metals?

Stainless steel is extremely durable and more scratch-resistant than precious metals like gold or silver. Tungsten is harder, so it'll stay pristine longer if you're really hard on your hands. Against titanium, 316L holds its own—both are very tough, with stainless being slightly more prone to fine surface marks over years of heavy use, but both very resistant to serious damage or structural failure.

Will 316L stainless steel tarnish, rust, or discolour?

No. That's the entire point of surgical-grade 316L. The molybdenum content creates a passive oxide layer that resists corrosion even in chlorinated pools, saltwater, and humid environments. You can wear it daily for years without tarnish, rust, or discoloration. If it gets dirty from lotions or dirt, a quick wipe with soapy water brings it back to new.

How do I care for a 316L stainless steel ring?

You barely need to. Wipe it occasionally with a damp cloth if it picks up lotion or grime. For a deeper clean once every few months, use warm soapy water, a soft brush, rinse, and dry. That's it. No polishing compounds, no special products, no taking it off for swimming or showering. 316L is designed to be worn and forgotten.

Can surgical steel be resized or engraved?
Can surgical steel rings be resized?

No. Like all stainless steel grades, 316L's hardness makes traditional resizing impossible. Order a ring sizer before ordering to get the right fit - we'll deduct the cost of the ring sizer from your ring order. We offer exchanges within 30 days if sizing doesn't work out, but resizing isn't an option.

Can I engrave surgical steel rings?

Absolutely. Laser engraving creates crisp, permanent personalization on 316L stainless steel—names, dates, messages, or symbols inside or outside the band. The engraving is durable and won't fade or wear away over time.

Whilst we don't offer engraving services right now, we plan to soon. Click here to sign up for news and updates.

How good is 316L Stainless Steel for people with metal allergies?
Is 316L stainless steel hypoallergenic?

For most people, yes. 316L contains nickel but releases it at extremely low levels—about 0.02 μg/cm²/week, which is roughly 10 times below EU regulatory safety limits. Many people with mild nickel sensitivities wear 316L without issues. That said, if you have severe nickel allergy or have reacted to stainless steel jewellery before, titanium or nickel-bonded tungsten are your safest bets.

Which metals are best for people with metal allergies?

Titanium, Tungsten, 316 Stainless Steel, Zirconium, and Platinum are all safe options for people with metal allergies.

If you've had a reaction to rings before, it's worth considering if you have an allergy or if you've actually experienced "wedding ring dermatitis", a condition where moisture and soap trapped behind your ring cause a reaction with your skin.
