Stainless Steel (304) Wedding Rings

Budget-Friendly & Practical

304 stainless steel offers an affordable entry point for wedding or fashion ring wearers who understand basic maintenance realities. 304 delivers great durability for casual wear and everyday life. It just doesn't quite match the corrosion resistance of 316L surgical-grade stainless so needs more attention if you're in and out of pools, handling harsh chemicals, or constantly soaking your hands.

Who Should Choose a 304 Stainless Steel Wedding Ring?

  • People who are unlikely to be exposing their ring to regular salt of chlorinated water and don’t work with harsh chemicals (such as cleaning solutions)

  • Budget-conscious first-time buyers wanting to test whether ring-wearing suits
    them

  • Backup
or gym rings for people who already own a primary ring

  • Occasional wearers who remove rings for work or active pursuits

If you swim three times a week in chlorinated pools or work with cleaning chemicals all day, you'll be happier in 316L surgical grade stainless steeltitanium, or tungsten.

FAQs

304 Stainless Steel durability and maintenance
How durable is 304 stainless steel compared to other metals?

More scratch-resistant than gold or silver, less so than tungsten. Against titanium, they're roughly similar in overall toughness. The real difference is corrosion resistance: 304 can develop water spots, discoloration, or surface tarnish in demanding environments (pools, saltwater, harsh chemicals), whereas 316L, titanium, and tungsten handle those exposures without issue. For normal daily wear without constant water exposure, 304 holds up well.

Will 304 stainless steel tarnish or rust?

It depends on how you wear it. In dry, normal conditions with occasional hand-washing, 304 stays clean and bright. In high-moisture or chemical-heavy environments—think daily swimming, hot tub use, or handling cleaning products—surface discoloration can develop over a few months. It's not destructive rust, but it does require cleaning and occasional polishing to restore appearance.

How do I maintain a 304 stainless steel ring?

Plan on 5 minutes monthly: warm soapy water, soft brush, thorough rinse, and dry with a microfiber cloth. If discoloration appears, use a stainless steel polishing cloth or gentle metal polish to restore shine. Avoid prolonged exposure to chlorine, saltwater, and harsh chemicals. Remove your ring during heavy chemical work or extended water activities. With this basic care routine, 304 stays pristine for years.

Is 304 Stainless safe for sensitive skin?
Is 304 stainless steel hypoallergenic?

Not for everyone. 304 contains nickel at levels similar to many everyday items, but it doesn't meet the ultra-low nickel release standards that 316L achieves (0.02 μg/cm²/week). If you've had reactions to jewellery before or have diagnosed nickel sensitivity, 316L surgical-grade stainless, titanium, or nickel-bonded tungsten are safer choices. For most people without known sensitivities, 304 is okay.

What's the most suitable metal for people with metal allergies?

Titanium, Tungsten, 316 Stainless Steel, Zirconium, and Platinum are all safe options for people with metal allergies.

If you've had a reaction to rings before, it's worth considering if you have an allergy or if you've actually experienced "wedding ring dermatitis", a condition where moisture and soap trapped behind your ring cause a reaction with your skin.

Can 304 be resized or engraved?
Can 304 stainless steel rings be resized?

No. Stainless steel's hardness makes traditional resizing impossible. Order carefully using our sizing guide, or order a ring sizer before purchase. We offer exchanges within 30 days if sizing doesn't work out, but resizing isn't an option for any stainless steel grade.

Can I engrave 304 stainless steel rings?

Yes 304 can be engraved. Laser engraving works beautifully on 304 stainless steel, creating permanent, precise personalization. Add names, dates, or meaningful messages inside or outside the band. Engraving doesn't compromise durability and looks sharp for the life of the ring.

Whilst we don't offer engraving services right now, we plan to soon. Click here to sign up for news and updates.
